external harddrive
I am considering buying an external hard drive.

Does anyone have any advice? A recommended brand? If so, let me know.

Thanks.

I use a western digital MyBook as a primary backup. Its ok, but not meant for travelling. As a portable drive, I've found the LaCie's to be very rugged and durable.

If you really want portability, you want a 2.5" drive because the enclosures can run off of usb or firewire power. All of the 3.5" enclosures have two wires, one to the data port (usb or firewire) and one to the wall power. 3.5" drives are cheaper per GB than 2.5" drives though. A good but cheap enclosure will let you put any IDE hard drive in it of the appropriate size. IDE drives aren't quite as quick as SCSI or SATA drives, but tend to be cheaper. You should be able to buy a good enclosure separate from a drive for less than $20 plus US shipping. The drive itself could be bought at the same time or separately. Go to pricewatch.com and find what you want. Don't buy a "generic" or "house brand" drive (all of the name brands are pretty much the same quality), but a "generic" or "house brand" enclosure should be fine. Make sure the drive has the appropriate connector for the enclosure you are looking at.

I was just poking around since I remembered that I needed a new enclosure, and found that the best I could do is $24 with shipping for a 3.5" EIDE-USB enclosure. I decided to spend $34 instead and get the interchangeable Firewire and USB one.

What would you think if I purchased this:

MAXTOR 320GB USB2.0 EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE - U01H320

Maxtor:
FRYS.com #: 5239627
Easy add-on storage for home or office. Instantly expand your storage to hold digital photos, music, and data files. It's simple to install--just plug the external drive into an available USB 2.0/1.1 port on your PC. You can even improve the performance of your computer by moving your files over to the Personal Storage 3200, PC compatible.

I have a friend that is going home for Christmas and will bring it back for me. I really want portablity, but I also want something simple for my friend to bring back for me.

Anyway, I trust your advice, so let me know if it would be a mistake to take this road.

Get it. That's cheaper than I could put one together from non-name brand parts, and Maxtor is a generally good drive manufacturer name.

In which country will you be buying this external hard drive?

If in the US, I suggest visiting the Fry's website and buying their cheapest 250GB or 500GB model.
